The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has decided to exempt foreigners traveling to some areas affected by the earthquake and tsunami from visa issuance fees. The areas in the plan are Iwata, Fukushima, and Miyagi Prefectures. Since March tourism in those areas have dropped more than 30% from last year, and this the plan hopes to alleviate the drop. Specifically, the normal 3,000 yen or the multi-entry 6,000 yen fee will be made free for visitors who show that they have hotel reservations, airplane tickets, etc. to those three prefectures.
